Chromatographic sorbents (adsorbents) are designed to separate mixtures of substances in the physico-chemical chromatography method. These are solids that serve as a stationary phase in a system where the components of the analyzed mixture move along the sorbent along with the mobile phase (liquid or gas). If the molecules of different components have different adsorption or solubility, then their residence time in the stationary phase and the average speed of movement through the column are different. Some components remain in the upper layer of the sorbent, others, with lower adsorption capacity, end up in the lower part of the column, some leave the column along with the mobile phase. This is how the separation of components is achieved.
